Understand Your Birthing Options
According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 40 percent of all deliveries are by cesarean! Above all, it’s important to understand the facts about cesarean births prior to delivery so you can make the best choice when it comes to the birth of your child.
The majority of pregnancies deliver vaginally, however cesarean are on the rise. While some cesarean births are planned, others occur when unexpected problems happen during delivery. In many cases of risky deliveries, doctors will recommend cesarean delivery when it is believed to be safer.
As doulas, it is our job to help support you in your decisions throughout your pregnancy and delivery. Our goal is to help you understand what a cesarean birth is, why a cesarean birth may be done, and what to expect when your baby is born via a cesarean.
During our time together, we will explore the common reasons for and the process of cesarean birth so you will know what to expect, which is why we invite you to attend our next webinar, The What, Why, And How of Cesarean Birth.
Exploring Cesarean Births
In some instances, the need for a cesarean can be determined before labor begins. Other times, however, the need for a cesarean birth only becomes clear during the course of labor.
Common reasons for cesarean births include problems with the pelvis shape/size, the placenta, umbilical cord, or the position of the baby.
Statically, having a doula to support you during birth can decrease your risk of an unplanned cesarean by 28 percent. Having a birth plan, as well as contingency plan, is always a good idea. A doula can help you understand the medical side, offer suggestions to assist with vaginal delivery and help you advocate for your wishes. However, medical professionals, such as a midwife or doctor, will typically make the call as to whether or not a cesarean birth is necessary if a danger arises.
Understanding what to expect during and after a cesarean birth will help you prepare for various outcomes. The more you know the more confident you will feel when your delivery day arrives!
